Basketball Recap: Weston Ranch Takes Loss Despite Strong Efforts from Mika Abriam and Ja'naysha Green

Weston Ranch played a tough matchup on Thursday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They might have been a little too into the holiday spirit, gifting the Calaveras Red Hawks an easy 58-32 victory. While losing is never fun, the Cougars can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 1040th, while the Red Hawks are ranked 400th).

Weston Ranch's loss came despite strong showings from Ja'Naysha Green and Mika Abriam. Green went 7 for 16 on her way to 15 points in addition to seven boards and four steals, while Abriam almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards. Abriam continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played.

Calaveras was led to victory by Emma Clark and Mariah Maddock. Clark almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten boards, while Maddock posted 13 points and three steals. Clark has been hot recently, having also posted three or more steals the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Hannah Emerson, who had 12 points.

Weston Ranch dropped their record down to 1-7 with the defeat, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Calaveras, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-3.

Weston Ranch didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 57-34 loss against Wood on the 20th. As for Calaveras, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 57-42 victory against Oakdale on the 20th.
