Basketball Recap: Marquez Beats Maywood Academy for Their Fifth Straight Victory

Marquez had won four straight games and Corshell Vaughn did her part to make it five on Friday. The Marquez Gladiators really took it to the Maywood Academy Nighthawks for the full four quarters, racking up a 53-25 win thanks in part to Vaughn, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 22 rebounds. She is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down 11 or more in the last 33 games she's played dating back to last season.

Another player making a difference was Samantha Larios, who posted nine points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That's the most steals she has posted since back in November of 2024.

Marquez has been performing well recently as they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 29.9 points per game. As for Maywood Academy, their loss was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 6-7.

Marquez will head out to challenge Sotomayor at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Sotomayor's defense has only allowed 26.9 points per game this season, so Marquez's offense will have their work cut out for them. As for Maywood Academy, they will be playing at home against Elizabeth at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Maywood Academy is facing Elizabeth at the right time seeing as Elizabeth is stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
