Recap: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Montgomery Aztecs
After flying high against the San Ysidro Cougars last Wednesday, the Otay Ranch Mustangs came back down to earth. Otay Ranch fell 66-55 to Montgomery on Friday. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Several Mustangs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Maleah Porch, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds. That's the first time this season that Porch scored 15 or more points. Jaira Moore was another key contributor, scoring 18 points.
Even though they lost, Otay Ranch smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Montgomery only pulled down four offensive rebounds.
Paula Zumstein continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Montgomery, scoring 27 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Jordan Whitehead, who scored 12 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Otay Ranch's loss dropped their record down to 10-6. As for Montgomery, they pushed their record up to 11-9 with that win, which was their third straight at home.
Otay Ranch will head out on the road to face off against Chula Vista at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Chula Vista focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Monday. Montgomery won't have much time to rest: their next match is against St. Mary's Academy at 1:30 p.m. on January 13th. St. Mary's Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Montgomery in California (St. Mary's Academy is ranked 79th, while Montgomery is ranked 414th).
