Baseball Recap: Boardman Find Success

The home team had won the previous seven meetings between Boardman and Poland Seminary, and Boardman kept the tradition alive. The Spartans came out on top against the Bulldogs by a score of 7-2 on Tuesday. This was a revenge game for the Spartans: when they faced off against the Bulldogs back in March, they had to take a 6-3 loss.

Tyler Kirlik made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 11 batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off nine hits (and only one walk). Boardman is undefeated when Kirlik posts eight or more strikeouts, but 5-12 otherwise. Kirlik was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Boardman let Vince Butto and Sammy Moritz run wild. Butto went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, two doubles, and one RBI, while Moritz went 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. Butto is becoming a predictor of Boardman's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 4-1 (and 6-11 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Ricky Gozur, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Boardman kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post 11 or more hits.

Boardman's record now sits at 10-12. As for Poland Seminary, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-6 record this season.

Boardman will be playing at home against GlenOak at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Golden Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 3.9 runs per game this season, so the Spartans' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Poland Seminary, they will venture away from home to take on Howland at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
