Will Helms has been named player of the year. "We had a group of 4 guys that all could be awarded this Player of the Year selection. However, Will Helms was solid for us in so many ways this season. As a senior, Will stepped forward and became the vocal leader and identity of our team. He exhibited a passionate desire to win and go out on top. Through his determination and tenacity, the team responded and came along side him toward the end of the season. He pushed each and every team mate to be better than the day before, practice before and game before. His heated post-game speech to the team following the last regular season game loss to Wilson was one for the record books. He challenged everyone, including me and the coaching staff to push harder. He led by example and once we entered the State Tournament, he would not be denied the elusive State Championship that Wilmington had flirted with so many times the past few seasons. Our team fought very hard and Will pitched us to victory in the State Championship game. Congrats Will!"
