The Aquinas Falcons came tearing into Saturday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They took down Corona 69-50. Given Aquinas' advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 150th, while Corona is ranked 310th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Aquinas got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Breanna Bates out in front who scored 26 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Madeleine De Kodia, who scored 13 points along with seven steals and five assists.
Corona lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Gizelle Acosta, who scored 14 points along with five blocks and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Acosta has scored all season. Fia Liaga was another key contributor, scoring 16 points along with seven assists.
Aquinas has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 11 of their last 12 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. As for Corona, their defeat dropped their record down to 15-8.
Aquinas will face off against Pacifica Christian/Orange County at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Hopefully Pacifica Christian/Orange County focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 19 last Tuesday. As for Corona, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against King at 7:00 p.m.
