The Rome Wolves will square off against the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs at 5:55 p.m. on Friday. Rome has given up an average of 6.6 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
Rome lost 12-2 to South Paulding on Wednesday. The loss continues a trend for the Wolves in their meetings with the Spartans: they've now lost four in a row.
Rome saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Wyatt Costlow, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That stolen base marked the first that Costlow snagged this season.
Meanwhile, Kennesaw Mountain had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.7 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They blew past the Lions 15-4. The result was nothing new for the Mustangs, who have now won eight games by ten runs or more so far this season.
Daniel Fore looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-low in hits.
On the hitting side, George Lutz and Isander Poventud did most of the damage at the plate: Lutz scored three runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances, while Poventud went 2-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one double. Those three runs gave Lutz a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Brady Caron, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Kennesaw Mountain was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .417. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .324 or higher in four consecutive contests.
Kennesaw Mountain pushed their record up to 11-3 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Rome, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-8.
Rome skirted past Kennesaw Mountain 7-5 in their previous matchup back in March of 2017. Does Rome have another victory up their sleeve, or will Kennesaw Mountain turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
