The Montgomery Aztecs were the 75-40 winner over the Victory Christian Academy Knights when they last played one another back in February of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Montgomery took a 45-34 hit to the loss column at the hands of Victory Christian Academy on Wednesday. While losing is never fun, Montgomery can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 433rd, while Victory Christian Academy is ranked 183rd).
Several Aztecs players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jordan Whitehead, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. Another player making a difference was Susanna Paliza, who scored three points along with two steals.
Victory Christian Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Sophia Abella, who scored 20 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Mai'ana Norita, who dropped a double-double on 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Montgomery's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 11-11. As for Victory Christian Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.
Montgomery will head out on the road to square off against San Ysidro at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. San Ysidro comes in still looking for their first win of the season. Victory Christian Academy won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Mater Dei Catholic at 6:00 p.m. on January 18th. Mater Dei Catholic is coming into the game hot, having won their last three games.
