After a string of five wins, the Progreso Red Ants's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They lost to Rio Hondo at home by a decisive 66-48 margin. Progreso lost against Rio Hondo in their previous head to head back in February of 2023, too, but the margin this time around was much wider than the 68-32 score last time.
When it comes to explaining why Progreso lost, one person who can't be blamed is Sophia Pecina. Despite the final result, she almost dropped a triple-double on 23 points, 13 rebounds, and nine steals. Pecina scored a full 47.9% of Progreso's points, the 21st time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Lorena Cerda, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Leading Rio Hondo to victory were Emily Molina and Abby Atkinson. Molina scored 20 points, while Atkinson scored 21 points. The matchup was Molina's fifth in a row with at least ten points. Hadassah Campbell was another key contributor, scoring nine points.
Progreso's defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-9. As for Rio Hondo, their win was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 15-4.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing IDEA Frontier College Prep the next time they take the court. Rio Hondo will head out to face IDEA Frontier College Prep at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, while Progreso will host them at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
