Lake Oconee Academy and Washington-Wilkes are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2021, but likely not for long. The Titans will challenge the Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lake Oconee Academy is coming into the game hot, having won their last three games.
For some reason, the away team has come away with the win the last four times Lake Oconee Academy and Lincoln County have met, but the home crowd finally got their W on Tuesday. The Titans walked away with a 6-3 victory over the Red Devils.
Kaitlyn Mamay spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on seven hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Lake Oconee Academy got a massive performance out of Beth Harris, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that Harris has launched this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Grace Kalmanowicz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Lake Oconee Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Lincoln County only posted a batting average of .250.
Meanwhile, while Washington-Wilkes put up plenty of runs on Saturday, the same can't be said for East Hall. The Tigers were the clear victors by an 11-0 margin over the Vikings. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Tigers considering their two-run performance the contest before.
Baylie Bridges made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out eight over five innings pitched. Those eight strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Molly Dawson was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Dahlia Moss was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Lake Oconee Academy now has a winning record of 11-10. As for Washington-Wilkes, their record now sits at 5-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Lake Oconee Academy has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Washington-Wilkes struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Lake Oconee Academy was able to grind out a solid win over Washington-Wilkes when the teams last played back in September, winning 8-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
