Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2022 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Junior Sherrill of
Lipscomb Academy (Nashville) is the 2022 MaxPreps Tennessee High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound senior wide receiver led the Mustangs to a 13-0 record and second consecutive Division II-AA state title.
Sherrill finished with 1,626 total yards and 25
touchdowns for a Lipscomb Academy program currently ranked No. 14 nationally by MaxPreps.
In a 42-0 win over Christ Presbyterian Academy (Nashville) in the state championship game, Sherrill earned MVP honors after grabbing 11 receptions for 141 yards and three touchdowns while adding 60 yards on the ground with another score.
Sherrill helped Lipscomb Academy notch a pair of marquee out-of-state wins to start the season, beating Milton (Ga.) and Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.).
Committed to Vanderbilt since June, Sherrill has nine FBS offers according to 247Sports. His most recent offer came from his high school coach Trent Dilfer, who took the job at Alabama-Birmingham earlier this month.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released January 10.
