Softball Recap: Hico Wins Going Away Against Itasca

Hico won the last time they faced Itasca and things went their way on Friday too. Hico was the clear victor by a 12-5 margin over Itasca. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won four games by seven runs or more so far this season.

Mikaelynn Miles made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off eight hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 4-for-5 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Abella Garza was a standout: she scored three runs and stole two bases while getting on base in three of her five plate appearances. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaitlyn Gontarek, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Hico kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.8 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 8.8.

Hico is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. Itasca's loss dropped their record down to 4-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Hico will face off against Italy at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Italy will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something Hico surely won't give up without a fight. As for Itasca, they will challenge Meridian at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meridian has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.29 runs per game on average), something Itasca will no doubt try to take advantage of.
