The Cathedral Fighting Irish will square off against the Indianapolis Shortridge Blue Devils at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Cathedral is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
Cathedral is probably headed into the matchup with a chip on their shoulder considering Carmel just ended the team's three-game winning streak on Saturday. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Greyhounds.
Cathedral got a good showing from Luke Finn, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. That's the fewest hits Finn has allowed over his last two games.
At the plate, Eli Sinsabaugh made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Sam Bowles also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.
Meanwhile, Indianapolis Shortridge came up short against Anderson Prep Academy last Saturday and fell 19-16.
Indianapolis Shortridge saw seven different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tate Turman, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another was Charlie Goodwin, who went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
Cathedral's record now sits at 17-9-1. As for Indianapolis Shortridge, their record is now 3-11.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Cathedral has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .433. However, it's not like Indianapolis Shortridge struggles in that department as they've averaged .449. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cathedral got the 'W' in their previous meeting back in May of 2021 against Indianapolis Shortridge by a conclusive 16-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Fighting Irish since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
