Basketball Recap: Arianna Velasco Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Sonora

It was a proper cat-fight when Escalon faced off against Sonora on Tuesday. The Escalon Cougars strolled past the Sonora Wildcats with points to spare, taking the game 53-36. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly 17 points.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Escalon to victory, but perhaps none more so than Arianna Velasco, who posted 16 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals. Velasco is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Madi Babasa, who put up 13 points along with five assists and five steals.

Escalon was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2024.

Escalon has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 12-10 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.2 points per game. As for Sonora, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-12 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Escalon will face off against Hilmar at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Sonora, they will square off against Orestimba at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Sonora has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
