Basketball Recap: Exeter Takes a Loss

Exeter played a tough contest on Tuesday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were dealt a 79-31 loss at the hands of the Hanford West Huskies. While losing is never fun, the Monarchs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 762nd, while the Huskies are ranked 286th).

Despite the defeat, Exeter had strong showings from Kylie Dias, who posted three points and seven steals, and Brooklyn Cooper, who scored five points and three blocks. That's the most steals Dias has posted since back in December of 2023.

Hanford West was led to victory by Kayla Silva and Mckenzee Batemon. Silva almost dropped a double-double on 19 points and nine assists, while Batemon went 10 for 16 on her way to 21 points in addition to eight boards and four steals. Batemon is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Skyelar Smith, who went 5 of 8 en route to 10 points along with six boards and four steals.

Exeter's loss dropped their record down to 10-7. As for Hanford West, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-5.

Exeter wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 29-25 defeat against Washington Union on the 16th. As for Hanford West, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 77-33 loss against Sierra Pacific on the 16th.
