Basketball Recap: Centennial Takes a Loss

Centennial lost against Lawndale back in December of 2017 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Centennial Apaches had to suffer through a 70-42 loss at the hands of the Lawndale Cardinals. While losing is never fun, the Apaches can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 889th, while the Cardinals are ranked 284th).

Loss or not, Centennial got some senior leadership from Erin Jackson and Aurbrianna Flowers. Jackson dropped a triple-double on 16 points, 20 rebounds, and ten blocks, while Flowers went 8 of 13 en route to 21 points along with six boards and five assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Flowers has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Patience Taylor, who posted three points and ten boards.

Even though they lost, Centennial smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 21 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 18 offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Telayia Fuller was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 25 points and 11 rebounds for Lawndale. Fuller is on a roll when it comes to boards, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last 11 games she's played. Kalani Pearson was another key player, going 6 for 13 on her way to 15 points in addition to six rebounds and three steals.

Centennial has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-14 record this season. As for Lawndale, the win (which was their sixth in a row) raised their record to 18-7.

Centennial didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 54-31 defeat against Santa Monica on the 30th. Lawndale has also already played their next contest, a 59-9 victory against Hawthorne on the 30th.
