Less than a week after its Winnersville Classic victory over rival Valdosta, the
Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.) high school football team is quarantining for two weeks out of precaution due to COVID-19 issues. The school district and several media outlets reported Wednesday that the No. 8 team in the MaxPreps Top 25 rankings would shutter all football activities until Oct. 26.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Lowndes County Schools has decided to quarantine the varsity football players and coaches. All football activities and games have been postponed," the school district posted Wednesday on its social media accounts.
The district, citing privacy laws, would not share specific test results, or if players or coaches had tested positive for coronavirus.
"Lowndes County Schools has worked diligently to mitigate the spread of
COVID 19 following stringent guidelines provided by the Department of
Public Health. LCS actively conducts contact tracing, quarantining any
exposures to stop the spread of COVID-19," the district continued.
The Vikings were scheduled to play Alcovy on Friday and Mitchell County on Oct. 23. Those non-region games will not be treated as forfeits, according to Georgia High School Association guidelines.
Lowndes is schedule to return to the field Oct. 30 against Tift County in its first Region 1-7A contest.
