The Roosevelt Roughriders will challenge the Wellington Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Roosevelt is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.1 runs per game this season.
Roosevelt fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Greeley West on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 6-5.
Lily Wiese was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one double. Molly Vetter was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Wellington had already won five in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.8 runs) and they went ahead and made it six on Tuesday. They never let Thompson Valley get on the board and left with a 10-0 victory. Wellington's pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last three contests.
Reganne Johnson was excellent, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Kensley Story, who earned two runs and one stolen base.
Wellington hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive games.
Wellington's win bumped their record up to 18-3. As for Roosevelt, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-8.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Roosevelt hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .380. However, it's not like Wellington struggles in that department as they've averaged .327. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Roosevelt suffered a grim 16-10 defeat to Wellington when the teams last played back in September. Will the Roughriders have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
