Canyon has gone 8-1-1 against La Habra recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Comanches will face off against the Highlanders at 3:15 p.m. Canyon's pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so La Habra's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
Canyon took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Brea Olinda, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Comanches had just enough and edged out the Wildcats 9-7.
Canyon got a massive performance out of Chip Mertz, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double. Jonathan Sandoval also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask La Habra). They put the hurt on Crean Lutheran with a sharp 13-0 win on Friday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Highlanders with their most commanding win of the season.
Isaac Aguirre tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run over six innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Jonah Mayo was a standout: he went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Bobby Brooks was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
La Habra always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Canyon's victory was their eighth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-8. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.8 runs over those games. As for La Habra, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-9 record this season.
Canyon skirted past La Habra 3-1 in their previous meeting back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Comanches since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
