Marquez's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jasmine Casillas, who posted a point along with 15 rebounds and six steals. Casillas is becoming a predictor of the Gladiators' success: when she posts at least three steals the team is undefeated (and 6-10 when she doesn't). Arihanna Aceves was another key player, putting up ten points and eight boards.
Marquez smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 25 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 32 consecutive contests dating back to last season.
Meanwhile, Maywood CES beat Maywood Academy 45-34 on Wednesday.
Marquez better keep an eye on Carmen Lilly. She was instrumental in Maywood CES' win, dropping a triple-double with 22 points, 14 rebounds, and 12 steals. With that strong performance, Lilly is now averaging an impressive 8.3 boards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Samantha Ortiz, who earned eight points in addition to 15 rebounds and three steals.
Marquez's record now sits at 9-10. As for Maywood CES, their record is now 6-3.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Marquez has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 38.1 boards per game. However, it's not like Maywood CES struggles in that department as they've been averaging 31.2 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Marquez beat Maywood CES 52-43 in their previous meeting two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Gladiators since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
