After remaining unbroken for 32 years, the single-game high school basketball scoring record in Montana has had three different owners over the past three years. Two of those players top the MaxPreps list of the highest-scoring single-game performances for the 2021-22 season.
Brad Cichosz broke the 32-year-old state record in 2020 with 68 points. However, his record fell two years later to Damon Gros Ventre of Lodge Gross on Feb. 1, 2022.
Gros Ventre's record lasted four days.
Journey Emerson of Lame Deer, scored 81 points in a 111-29 win over Forsyth on Feb. 5 to set the single-game high for the 2021-22 season. Emerson lands on the list twice as he scored 61 points on Dec. 21.
Emerson and Gros Ventre are familiar with each other. In fact, Lame Deer played Lodge Gross on Feb. 2, immediately after Gros Ventre's record performance. They met again on Feb. 8, the game immediately following Emerson's performance.
While Emerson and several other players had two games with 50 or more points, only one player in the nation had more than two games with that many points. Holy Cross (Covington, Ky.) junior Jacob Meyer, who led the nation with 38.2 points per game, had four games of 50 or more including a high of 58. He'll begins his senior year with 2,213 career points.
A total of 161 players scored at least 50 points. Sources include the MaxPreps leaderboards and
