The Sheldon Huskies struggled with assists on Friday (the West Valley Eagles had ten more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Sheldon took a 57-47 hit to the loss column at the hands of West Valley. While losing is never fun, Sheldon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 571st, while West Valley is ranked 139th).
When it comes to explaining why Sheldon lost, one person who can't be blamed is Charlize Miles. Despite the final result, she scored nine points along with nine rebounds and five steals. That's the first time this season that Miles pulled down eight or more rebounds. Nyah Duong was another key contributor, scoring 12 points.
Kayla Wiley was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 27 points and 13 rebounds for West Valley. Those 27 points set a new season-high mark for her. The team also got some help courtesy of Rainessa Matthews, who scored nine points along with six rebounds.
Sheldon has been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last eight matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-9 record this season. As for West Valley, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-3.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Rio Americano the next time they take the court. West Valley will head out to face Rio Americano at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, while Sheldon will host them at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
