George Washington had lost seven games on the road dating back to last season, but after bumping their record up to 3-9 on Tuesday that streak is in the rearview. They blew past the Thomas Jefferson Spartans 22-9. The Patriots not only won on Tuesday, but they posted their biggest win since August 26th (when they won 30-15).
Amelia Nelson and Sofie Schultz made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Nelson pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and six unearned) runs off eight hits. Meanwhile, Schultz tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. At bat, Nelson went 3-for-5 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run, while Schultz got on base in three of her five plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base. That's the most runs Schultz has posted over her last seven matchups.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Muggy Duffy, who went 4-for-6 with four runs, two triples, and three RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Gracie Arellano, who went 3-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
George Washington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 18 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.3 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 9.
As for Thomas Jefferson, they are on an 11-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 0-11. On the bright side, the nine- run performance marked their highest-scoring contest to date.
On Thomas Jefferson's side, Ariana Winn was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. That triple was Winn's first of the season. The team also got some help courtesy of Stella O'Malley, who went 3-for-4 with two RBI.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. George Washington will square off against rival Rangeview at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Thomas Jefferson is set to take on their familiar foe Denver East at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday.
