Three players who led their teams to section championships reap the Player of the Year honors on the MaxPreps Softball All-State Teams.
Lauren Sweet of Santiago (Corona) is the overall State Player of the Year while Rodriguez (Fairfield) shortstop Cheyenne Cordes is the Medium Schools Player of the Year and Anderson pitcher Cheridan Hawkins is the Small Schools Player of the Year.
Sweet earned
All-American honors from MaxPreps earlier this summer after hitting a grand slam in the final inning to lift Santiago over Canyon (Anaheim) in the Southern Section Division I championship game. She belted 15 home runs on the season to rank as one of the state leaders in that category.
Cordes was also selected as a MaxPreps All-American after leading Rodriguez to a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship. The California commit ranked among the state leaders in runs scored (62) and RBIs (66).
Hawkins led the Anderson Cubs to a Northern Section Division IV championship and led the state in strikeouts with 510, a total that ranked second in the nation according to statistics compiled by MaxPreps.
Travis Roebuck of El Diamante (Visalia) gets the nod for State Coach of the Year after leading the Miners to the Central Section Division I championship. El Diamante won the West Yosemite League championship and was seeded third for the playoffs behind No. 1 Stockdale and No. 2 Buchanan. While Central (Fresno) upset Buchanan in the second round, El Diamante topped Central 1-0 in 10 innings and then edged Stockdale 1-0 for the championship.
The MaxPreps California All-State Teams consist of a 60-member overall list that includes a 30-member first team and a 30-member second team. There is also a 30-member medium schools team and a 30-member small schools team.
