See a Washington player use his head to scoreIt should come as no surprise that a pair of northern Utah schools – Viewmont and Fremont – battled for the Class 5A boys soccer championship this week. Soccer teams from northern Utah regions have a long track record of success when it comes to taking home state titles.
Out of 13 schools that have won three or more boys soccer state titles, six hail from Davis and Weber counties. Bountiful and Woods Cross, crosstown rivals from Region 5, lead the way.
Bountiful is the all-time leader with nine state titles and last won it all in 2013. The Braves reached their championship peak in the late 90s, winning three straight Class 4A titles from 1998 to 2000. Woods Cross also has a rich championship history in the sport. The Wildcats claimed four straight titles from 1984 to 1987 – the most consecutive state titles of any school. Woods Cross has six state titles overall, though none have come since 1995.
Five Salt Lake County schools have won three or more state titles in boys soccer since the Utah High School Activities Association first sanctioned the sport in 1983. Brighton leads the way with six titles. The Bengals won back-to-back crowns twice – in 1999 and 2000 and again in 2008 and 2009.
Sandy has produced the most repeat champions of any city inside Salt Lake County. Three Sandy area schools – Jordan, Alta and Waterford – have combined for 14 total state titles since 1990. The Ravens claimed the most recent championship among the trio, winning the 2A North crown this spring.
