The Mercersburg Academy Blue Storm are ranked highly in their home state, and on Friday they took on another highly ranked team in the form of the Hun Raiders. Mercersburg Academy sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 58-56 win over the Raiders. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
It was another big night for Annie Mohr, who scored 22 points along with five assists. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Nia Henley, who scored ten points along with four steals.
When it comes to explaining why Hun lost, one person who can't be blamed is Gabby D'Agostino. Despite the final result, she scored 28 points. That was a full 50% of Hun's points, marking the 12th time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. CeeJay Thomas was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds.
Even though they lost, Hun smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mercersburg Academy only pulled down five offensive rebounds.
Mercersburg Academy has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. As for Hun, their loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-12.
Mercersburg Academy won't have much time to rest: their next match is against the Lions at 12:00 p.m. on February 3rd. GVCS Broadfording will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in their respective state's rankings (they are ranked 121st in Maryland, while the Blue Storm are ranked ninth in Pennsylvania). Hun does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
