The McGuffey Highlanders had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.5 points), and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They managed a 65-60 win over Charleroi. Given McGuffey's advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 182nd, while Charleroi is ranked 436th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Alexis Ewig was her usual excellent self, scoring 24 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Libby Mallah, who scored 12 points along with two steals.
Charleroi's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Ella Sypolt, who scored 22 points. Bella Carroto was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
McGuffey's win bumped their record up to 12-2. As for Charleroi, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost seven of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. McGuffey will take on Jefferson-Morgan at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Jefferson-Morgan is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses. Charleroi will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Waynesburg Central at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
