The Salinas Cowboys lost to the Watsonville Wildcatz back in February of 2023, but the Salinas Cowboys didn't allow the Watsonville Wildcatz the same satisfaction on Friday. Salinas snuck past Watsonville with a 53-49 win. The win made it back-to-back wins for Salinas.
Salinas' success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Payton Edwards led the charge by scoring 15 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Edwards has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jennifer Rivera, who scored 15 points.
Watsonville lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Stephanie Martinez, who scored 13 points. Another player making a difference was Fernanda Lazo, who scored nine points along with four steals.
Even though they lost, Watsonville were working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Salinas has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. As for Watsonville, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-6 record this season.
Salinas will be playing at home against Alisal at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Alisal knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matches -- so hopefully Salinas likes a good challenge. As for Watsonville, they will head out on the road to take on Monterey at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Monterey is out to stop a three-game streak of losses at home.
