The Newark Memorial Cougars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their third straight loss. Their rough 53-33 defeat to Irvington might stick with them for a while. While losing is never fun, Newark Memorial can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 796th, while Irvington is ranked 238th).
Several Cougars players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Lavina Sanft, who scored 12 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Sanft has scored all season. Sydney Scott was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Newark Memorial has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost ten of their last 13 matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 7-13 record this season. As for Irvington, they pushed their record up to 17-4 with that victory, which was their seventh straight on the road.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newark Memorial won't have much time to rest: their next game is against Lincoln at 1:30 p.m. on January 27th. Lincoln is coming into the match hot, having won their last six games. As for Irvington, they will be playing at home against James Logan at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully James Logan focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up six on Friday.
