Even though the Otay Ranch Mustangs scored an imposing 55 points on Friday, the Montgomery Aztecs still came out on top. Montgomery took their game against Otay Ranch 66-55. The win made it back-to-back wins for Montgomery.
Montgomery found their leader in underclassman Paula Zumstein, who scored 27 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Jordan Whitehead was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Otay Ranch's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Maleah Porch, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Porch has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaira Moore, who scored 18 points.
Even though they lost, Otay Ranch smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Montgomery only pulled down four offensive rebounds.
Montgomery is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-9 record this season. As for Otay Ranch, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-6.
Montgomery won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against St. Mary's Academy at 1:30 p.m. on January 13th. St. Mary's Academy presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Montgomery in California (St. Mary's Academy is ranked 79th, while Montgomery is ranked 414th). As for Otay Ranch, they will head out on the road to challenge Chula Vista at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Chula Vista is out to stop a three-game streak of losses at home.
