James Lick is 0-9 against Del Mar since April of 2016 but things could change on Tuesday. The Comets will look to defend their home field against the Dons at 4:00 p.m. James Lick will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
Overfelt hit James Lick with a five-run first inning on Thursday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Comets came up short against the Royals, falling 14-5. On the bright side, the five- run performance marked the Comets' highest-scoring matchup to date.
James Lick saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Adam Elizalde, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
Meanwhile, while Del Mar put up plenty of runs on Thursday, the same can't be said for San Jose. The Dons were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over the Bulldogs. The Dons might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four contests by seven runs or more this season.
Mason William made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Del Mar is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 1-3 otherwise. William was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Kyle McClements was a standout: he went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ryan Avery, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Del Mar kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as San Jose only managed six.
Del Mar is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for James Lick, their loss dropped their record down to 0-4.
James Lick suffered a grim 18-2 defeat to Del Mar when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Can the Comets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
