Downingtown West extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping them down to 15-6. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Avon Grove Red Devils. The Whippets were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Red Devils earlier this season, when they won 4-1.
Luke Dovidio made the most of his time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.
As for Avon Grove, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 7-13. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since April 30, 2025.
On Avon Grove's side, Wyatt Holdren was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave Holdren a new career-high in strikeouts (three). He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
In other pitching news, Ryan Fuller tossed a big game, striking out eight batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Logan Nelson was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Ian Schwing, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Downingtown West has already played their next game, a 5-0 victory against Council Rock South on the 20th. As for Avon Grove, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 6-5 loss against Souderton on the 18th.
