Cheyenne Mountain and Air Academy are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2019, but likely not for long. The Red-Tailed Hawks will square off against the Kadets at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Cheyenne Mountain is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Mesa Ridge hit Cheyenne Mountain with a four-run second inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Red-Tailed Hawks fell 7-4 to the Grizzlies.
Maci Houger and Michaela (MJ) Ewen stepped up to the plate in a big way. Houger went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Ewen went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Air Academy had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They put the hurt on the Thunder with a sharp 10-2 victory. The Kadets might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten matchups by six runs or more this season.
Bailey Williams made a splash no matter where she played. She struck out six batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits. Williams was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. She is on a roll when it comes to RBI, as she's now brought in three or more in each of the last three games she's played.
In other batting news, Keira Finkle was incredible, going 4-for-5 with four runs, two doubles, and one triple. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in September. Alex Finkle was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs and one double.
Air Academy kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive games.
Air Academy's record now sits at 14-3-1. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their loss dropped their record down to 12-4.
Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Cheyenne Mountain hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .345. However, it's not like Air Academy struggles in that department as they've averaged .381. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Cheyenne Mountain came out on top in a nail-biter against Air Academy in their previous meeting back in September, sneaking past 10-9. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red-Tailed Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
