Video: Top 25 national high school baseball rankings Argyle lands on top after going 71-1-1 over a two-year period.
As one of the highest draft picks in Northern Section history, it wasn't any surprise when Colin Barber of Pleasant Valley (Chico) was chosen by a group of sportswriters as the Northern Section Player of the Year.
Likewise, Barber is one of the highest-drafted medium schools players in the state of California and he has thus been chosen as the MaxPreps Medium Schools State Player of the Year.
Barber helped lead the Vikings to the Northern Section championship and a No. 21 ranking in the state of California, according to the MaxPreps Computer rankings. That's the second highest ranking among medium-sized schools, topped only by Southern Section Division 3 champion Great Oak (Temecula) at No. 13.
Barber also ranked third in the state in home runs with 10 and was seventh in RBI with 42. He also batted .493 with 45 runs scored.
The Viking senior topped his senior year by being chosen No. 136 overall by the Houston Astros. That's the highest draft selection by a Northern Section athlete since 2011 when
Aaron Westlake of Shasta (Redding) was taken No. 111 overall.
Pat Fuentes of Los Banos is the Medium Schools Coach of the Year. He led Los Banos to a 28-1 record and the first section championship for the program in 25 years. The only loss was to Buhach Colony (Atwater), which reached the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship game. Los Banos won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV championship with a 3-0 victory over Central Catholic.
The medium schools all-state team is composed of players who play in state playoff divisions that generally have between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
