The Escalon Cougars entered their tilt with the Hughson Huskies with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. Escalon walked away with a 43-36 win over Hughson on Tuesday. This was payback for Escalon, who suffered a 61-53 loss the last time these two teams met.
Escalon got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Arianna Velasco out in front who scored 11 points along with seven steals and six rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Sammy Lang, who scored 13 points along with seven steals and five rebounds.
Hughson's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Madi Duron, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 13 rebounds. Duron has been hot recently, having posted nine or more rebounds the last nine times she's played. Kareena Kang was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with two steals.
Escalon pushed their record up to 24-2 with that win, which was their sixth straight on the road. As for Hughson, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 19-8.
Escalon will head out on the road to square off against Hilmar at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Hilmar will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 779th, while Escalon is ranked 159th). Hughson does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
