Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Cherish Wiggins and Yahri Tyler Lead Desoto County to Victory

While DeSoto County didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-13), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They rang in the new year with a 58-45 victory over the Parrish Community Bulls on Thursday. Given the Bulldogs' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 79th, while the Bulls are ranked 400th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

DeSoto County was led to victory by Yahri Tyler and Cherish Wiggins. Tyler dropped a double-double on 21 points and 14 boards, while Wiggins went 8 of 18 on her way to 23 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists. That makes it four consecutive games in which Tyler has scored at least a third of DeSoto County's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Janeris Bing, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 12 points.

DeSoto County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 22 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in ten consecutive contests.

Despite the loss, Parrish Community saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jayna Bowen almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine boards. Bowen continues to improve, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Romana Lind, who posted six points along with six boards and four steals.

DeSoto County's record now sits at 10-2. As for Parrish Community, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season.

DeSoto County didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 55-43 win against Bradenton Christian on the 3rd. As for Parrish Community, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 38-22 defeat against Manatee on the 3rd.
