One year ago, Orange Lutheran's Cole Winn was not in the running for all-state honors in California. That's because he was reaping nearly every award available in the state of Colorado.
But after moving to California for his senior season, Winn has the unique distinction of being named state Player of the Year in two different states in his high school career. After earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors in Colorado as a junior, he earned the same award this year in California. He also has been named as the MaxPreps California Large School Player of the Year.
Winn earned state Player of the Year honors by four other organizations and was also area Player of the Year by both the Orange County Register and the Los Angeles Times. He finished the season with an 8-2 record and a paltry 0.20 ERA. He also helped the Lancers win the National High School Invitational, picking up a 9-0 pitching win over Florence (Ala.) and coming up with three RBIs in the championship game against Green Hope (Cary, N.C.).
Winn heads the California Large School All-State Teams, which consists of 30 first team members and 30 second team selections. Large schools are those that play in the following playoff divisions of the state sections: Southern Section Division 1 and 2, San Diego Open Division and Division 1, Los Angeles City Section Open Division and Division 1, Central Section Division 1, Central Coast Section Open Division and Division 1, Sac-Joaquin Section Division 1, North Coast Section Division 1.
Stu Clary of Vacaville is the large schools Coach of the Year. He led the Bulldogs to the first section championship appearance in school history and defeated Davis in two games to claim Vacaville's first baseball title. The Bulldogs did so in thrilling fashion, beating Davis in the bottom of the seventh of the decisive game with a come-from-behind rally. Along the way, Vacaville also beat Sac-Joaquin Section powers Elk Grove, Franklin and Jesuit before finally knocking off Davis for the crown.
Vacaville won the Monticello Empire League and finished 25-8 for the best record in school history, according to the Sacramento Bee.
