The Morse Tigers will face off against the Chula Vista Spartans at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Morse picked up another tournament win on Thursday. They were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over Castle Park. The Tigers haven't had any issues with the Trojans recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Manny Flores made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he pitched six innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Miguel Aguigui was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-2. Another player making a difference was Marcus Westover, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Meanwhile, Chula Vista had just enough and edged out Pacifica Christian 6-4 on Thursday.
Like Morse, Chula Vista also got a great game from a two-way player: Gabriel Mendoza. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits. Mendoza was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Mendoza wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Julian Martinez, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. Chula Vista is undefeated when Martinez posts two or more runs, but 4-6-2 otherwise.
Morse's win bumped their record up to 4-9-1. As for Chula Vista, they now have a winning record of 7-6-2.
Morse came out on top in a nail-biter against Chula Vista in their previous matchup back in March of 2023, sneaking past 3-2. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Spartans turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
