Even though Huntington Beach scored an imposing 57 points on Wednesday, Anaheim still came out on top. Anaheim took their game against Huntington Beach 66-57. Given Anaheim's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 86th, while Huntington Beach is ranked 394th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Anaheim's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Elise Marquez, who scored 19 points along with seven rebounds and seven steals. The contest was Marquez's sixth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Ashley Guzman, who scored 21 points along with seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, after only 24 points in their last matchup, Corona made sure to put some points up on the board against Huntington Beach on Thursday. Corona wrapped up 2023 with a 56-39 win over Huntington Beach.
Anaheim's victory bumped their record up to 12-0. As for Corona, their win bumped their record up to 12-5.
Everything came up roses for Anaheim against Corona in their previous meeting back in December of 2019 as the team secured a 70-28 win. With Anaheim ahead 42-16 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
