De La Salle is 9-1 against California since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Spartans will take on the Grizzlies at 4:00 p.m. De La Salle is coming into the match hot, having won their last eight games.
The home team had won the previous three meetings between De La Salle and Dougherty Valley, and De La Salle kept the tradition alive. The Spartans blew past the Wildcats 22-0 on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Spartans, who have now won ten contests by six runs or more so far this season.
Cooper Barnes looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, De La Salle got a massive performance out of Niko Baumgartner, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. That's the most stolen bases Baumgartner has posted since back in April. Zach Tchejeyan was another key player, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base.
De La Salle always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .574. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, California fell victim to San Ramon Valley and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Wolves. The Grizzlies have struggled against the Wolves recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost meeting.
California also got a good showing from Chris Basurto, who tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits.
On the hitting side, California saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Johnny Edwards, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base.
De La Salle pushed their record up to 18-3 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for California, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-9.
De La Salle beat California 7-3 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Grizzlies have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
