Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Damien). They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past the Upland Highlanders/Scots 9-7. The victory continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Highlanders/Scots: they've now won five in a row.
Damien got a great performance from Russell Del Castillo as he tossed six innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. Del Castillo also tossed a walk, which is notable because the Spartans are 5-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 6-7 otherwise.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Elius Kelly, who went 3-for-4 with three runs and one triple. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Ryan Gonzalez also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Damien was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .395. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Upland only posted a batting average of .250.
Damien's win bumped their record up to 11-8. As for Upland, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-14.
