The Gaston Christian Eagles typically have all the answers at home, but on Thursday the Gaston Day Spartans proved too difficult a challenge. They walked away with a 71-61 win over the Eagles. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Gaston Day to victory, but perhaps none more so than Kurt Hunter, who scored 18 points along with five assists. Another player making a difference was Deshawn Coulter, who scored 17 points.
Gaston Christian's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Cameron Newman, who scored 22 points, and Makoi Mabor Marier who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Joe Rhyne, who scored eight points along with five assists.
The win made it two in a row for Gaston Day and bumps their season record up to 18-11. As for Gaston Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-15.
Gaston Day won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Concord Academy at 6:30 p.m. on February 9th. Concord Academy will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something Gaston Day surely won't give up without a fight. Gaston Christian does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
