The Bonita Vista Barons will square off against the Westview Wolverines at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Bonita Vista knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past eight contests -- so hopefully Westview likes a good challenge.
Last Friday, Bonita Vista beat Mater Dei Catholic 56-43. Given Bonita Vista's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 148th, while Mater Dei Catholic is ranked 469th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Mahliya Wilson, who scored 25 points along with seven rebounds. She has been hot recently, having posted 19 or more points the last seven times she's played. Haydee Arancibia-hardwick was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Meanwhile, Westview came tearing into Friday's matchup with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They snuck past Del Norte with a 52-48 victory.
Westview can attribute much of their success to Sydney Heyn, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds, and Sarah Heyn, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten assists. Heyn has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last five times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Maren Zimmer, who scored nine points.
Bonita Vista pushed their record up to 14-12 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.4 points per game. As for Westview, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-10 record this season.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Bonita Vista have been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 32.4 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Westview struggles in that department as they've been averaging 30.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Bonita Vista came up short against Westview in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, falling 60-54. Can Bonita Vista avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
