Cleveland is 9-1 against Volcano Vista since November of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Storm will challenge the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. Cleveland has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 152 points over their last three contests.
Cleveland is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Rio Rancho, who was ranked 13th at the time (Cleveland was ranked second). The Storm blew past the Rams 49-14 two weeks ago. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-7.
Cleveland had a senior duo take command as Jordan Hatch threw for 163 yards and four TDs while completing 80% of his passes and Jacob Maldonado gained 75 total yards and three touchdowns.
Cleveland's run defense was locked in: Rio Rancho could only muster 3.5 yards per carry. The team can thank Elijah Vazquez for the heroic effort on defense: he. Cleveland didn't have any issues in that department, having averaged 8.7.
Cleveland didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. In fact, those interceptions all came courtesy of defensive juggernaut Karson Weddle.
Meanwhile, with a playoff win on the line, Volcano Vista rose to the challenge on Friday. They secured a 14-10 W over the Cougars. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.
Cleveland better keep an eye on Justus Foutz. He was instrumental in Volcano Vista's win, rushing for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 87 rushing yards gave Foutz a new career-high.
One reason for the win was Volcano Vista's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Kaleb Vander Wilt was especially locked on to Cibola's QB and sacked him three times. Vander Wilt also made eight total tackles, which is notable because Volcano Vista is 7-1 when he posts at least three total tackles, but 1-2 otherwise. Another thorn in Cibola's side was Alvin Gomez, who picked up a sack, forced one fumble, and made three total tackles (2.0 for loss).
Cleveland's record is now 9-1. As for Volcano Vista, their record now sits at 8-3.
Everything came up roses for Cleveland against Volcano Vista when the teams last played back in October, as the squad secured a 49-13 win. Do the Storm have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
