The Sinton Pirates will challenge the Cuero Gobblers at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Sinton knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 31 points or more in their past 13 matchups -- so hopefully Cuero likes a good challenge.
Sinton is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They walked away with a 35-26 win over Wimberley. Given the Pirates' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 115th, while the Texans are ranked 350th) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
The match pitted two dominant backs against one another in Mykha Green and Maverick Jacobs. Green had a great game and rushed for 124 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Jacobs was balling out in the loss, rushing for 129 yards and one score while picking up 7.2 yards per carry.
Meanwhile, Cuero came tearing into Friday's contest with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 24.2 points), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Pirates as they made off with a 48-27 victory. That's two games straight that the Gobblers have won by exactly 21 points.
Cuero had a senior duo take command as Jaxxon Marie threw for 257 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 72.7% of his passes and Walker Dietze picked up 135 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Cuero didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Rockport-Fulton to a completion percentage of just 50%. The Gobblers have been improving in that area: they had allowed a completion percentage of 0.65 earlier this season, but they've only allowed one of 0.65 in their last three games.
Cuero didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off three passes before the game was over. It was truly a group effort as Aiden Strecker, Jordan Jones, and Jossiah Taylor picked up one apiece.
Sinton's win bumped their record up to 12-1. As for Cuero, their victory bumped their record up to an identical 12-1.
Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Sinton has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 321.6 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Cuero struggles in that department as they've been averaging 217.7 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Sinton and Cuero were neck-and-neck in their previous matchup back in October, but Sinton came up empty-handed after a 56-55 loss. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Marie, who threw for 322 yards and seven TDs, and also rushed for 100 yards and one score. Now that the Pirates know the damage he can cause, will they be able to stop him this time? There's only one way to find out.
