The Winside Wildcats's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their 13th straight loss. They received a tough blow as they fell 46-28 to Wausa. Winside found out winning isn't easy when you make six fewer threes than your opponent.
Ellie Topp and Hadleigh Schutt certainly did their best on Wednesday to avoid the loss. Topp scored 14 points along with eight rebounds, while Schutt dropped a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. That was a full 50% of Winside's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
Wausa's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sienna West, who scored 14 points along with three steals. Elle Brazel was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with six steals.
Winside dropped their record down to 1-16 with that defeat, which was their 16th straight on the road dating back to last season. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 24.8 points per game. As for Wausa, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-13.
Winside will take on the Mustangs at TBD on Tuesday. Stanton presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Wildcats in Nebraska (the Mustangs are ranked 134th, while the Wildcats are ranked 278th). As for Wausa, they will face off against the Bees at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
