Denver North extended their winning streak to eight on Wednesday, bumping them up to 12-2. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 5-4 W against the Northfield Nighthawks. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Vikings have posted since August 16th.
Veronica Loera-Tafoya made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out eight batters over eight innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sophia Guerrero, who went 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run.
As for Northfield, their loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 6-1 and their overall record down to 10-5. They haven't had much luck with Denver North recently, as the team has come up short the last three times they've met.
Like Denver North, Northfield also got a great game from a two-way player: Brielle Montoya. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over 7.2 innings while giving up four earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Montoya was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one triple and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.
Montoya wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Audrina Srichabok, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that Srichabok has hit this season. Maci Molinary was another, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base and one run.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Denver North will square off against Rangeview at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Raiders have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.81 runs per game on average), something the Vikings will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Northfield, they will be playing at home against Thomas Jefferson at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Spartans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.25 runs per game on average), something the Nighthawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
