The Math Civics & Sciences Mighty Elephants waltzed into their match Friday with two straight wins but they left with three. They blew past Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush 36-5 on the road. Given Math Civics & Sciences' advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 294th, while Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush is ranked 605th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jabriyah Gibbs was the offensive standout of the match as she dropped a double-double on 19 points and 11 rebounds. The match was her third in a row with at least ten points. Kayla Robinson was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with five rebounds.
Despite the loss, Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush saw an underclassman step up: Tima Sonnanburg scored five points.
Math Civics & Sciences' win bumped their record up to 3-0. As for Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-3.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Math Civics & Sciences is on the road again on Monday and play against West Philadelphia at 3:15 p.m. on January 8th. Hopefully West Philadelphia focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 14 two weeks ago. As for Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, they will head out on the road to face off against Roxborough at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. Roxborough will be looking to extend their current six-game winning streak.
