It was a good run, but the Portage Mustangs unfortunately witnessed the end of their 14-game winning streak on Thursday. They took a hard 59-43 fall against River Valley. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Portage has scored all season.
Despite the loss, Portage still got an impressive performance from Jenna Burkett, who scored 16 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Burkett is on a roll when it comes to points, as she's now scored 15 or more in the last eight games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Alex Chobany, who scored eight points along with five rebounds.
River Valley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rylee Kitner led the charge by scoring 14 points along with six rebounds and four steals. Ava Persichetti was another key contributor, scoring 20 points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Portage's defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-1. As for River Valley, their win bumped their record up to 9-4.
Portage will be playing at home against West Shamokin at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday. West Shamokin will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Pennsylvania Rankings (they are ranked 462nd, while Portage is ranked 21st). As for River Valley, they will head out on the road to challenge Conemaugh Valley at 7:15 p.m. on Monday. Conemaugh Valley comes in still looking for their first win of the season.
