Even though the Mira Loma Matadors have not done well against the Woodland Wolves recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. Mira Loma enjoyed a cozy 50-31 victory over the Wolves. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Mira Loma also won the last time the pair played on January 8th.
Mira Loma got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Allison Canafe out in front who dropped a double-double on 14 points and ten rebounds. Canafe has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last 12 times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Demi Tawadrous, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and 14 rebounds.
Woodland lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Mayte Leon Perez, who scored 14 points along with five rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Leon Perez has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Madilyn Watkins, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
Even though they lost, Woodland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. This was only their 12th loss (out of 13 games) when they hit their own glass that hard.
Mira Loma's win bumped their record up to 11-12. As for Woodland, they are on a nine-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-17.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Mira Loma will face off against the Knights at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Rio Linda focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 20 on Monday. As for Woodland, they will head out on the road to take on the Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing is sure in Woodland Christian's favor as the squad sits on four straight wins at home while the Wolves have been banged up by nine consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
